What To Expect

We will start our Architectural Rioja Tour from Bilbao with a guided visit of the Marques de Riscal winery designed by one of todays leading architects, Frank Gehry. (Also famed for the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao)

The winery is set in Eltziego (Rioja Alavesa) and is one of the oldest wineries of the region. An incredible beautiful building built with stainless steel, wood and sandstone.

What to expect:

  • Guided winery visit (including the visit to the vineyards)

  • Taste three of their most representative wines: their famous white wine and two red wines: a crianza and their award winning Rioja Reserva (minimum of three years ageing).

Our knowledge of the area, priority access and driving removes the hassle so you can enjoy every sip of the finest Rioja wines

In this tour we will also visit the Ysios cellar designed by Santiago Calatrava. The structure boasts many architectural features, for example, the roof aims to simulate the Sierra Cantabria (one of the most important geological factors in the Rioja microclimate).

Ysios focuses on making the new style of Rioja wines where the vineyard is the focus limiting the use of oak to a minimum so the fruit is the the big protagonist. For this purpose they use only the oldest vineyards (some of them pre-phylloxera) making Reservas (minimum of 3 years of ageing) and Gran Reservas (minimum5 years of ageing).

What to expect:

  • Quick introduction to the winery and wine making process in their cellar

  • You will have a tutored tasting where you will taste two of their remarkable wines with an aperitif (Iberian ham for example

  • In case the Ysios winery was closed for visits (sometimes it happens) we will upgrade you for a wine tasting in Carlos San Pedro winery with the best views over the Ysios winery and the Sierra Cantabria mountains. You will taste 4 wines paired with 3 local appetisers. And of course you will be able to take as many pictures as you want of the Ysios building!

We will head to Laguardia for a walk through the beautiful walled, medieval city of LaGuardia, with its underground cellars and wineries. Laguardia is both an architectural marvel and one of the most beautiful towns in the Rioja Alavesa region, if not all of Spain.

What to expect:

  • Walk around this stunning medieval village. Think fortified walls and narrow cobbled streets, surrounded by vineyards and mountains.

  • Enjoy a variety of 3 lovely local pintxos (the Basque tapas) paired with Rioja wine

  • Enjoy a 360º views over the Rioja wine region as you will be in the highest part of the wine valley!
